The challenge

The problem, stated precisely

Information about animal testing exists, but it's scattered across certification bodies, corporate websites and volunteer-maintained lists, with criteria that don't line up. A shopper who wants to decide in the supermarket aisle has no time to reconcile three conflicting sources. The problem wasn't a lack of data, it was a lack of architecture.

Approach

The decisions that shaped the project

Every decision below had an alternative that was discarded. Recording the why is what makes the reasoning reusable in another context.

  1. 01

    Model trust, not just data

Instead of a binary seal that hides uncertainty, we defined a trust score that exposes the strength of the evidence behind each classification. Users see not only the brand's status, but how far that status can be trusted and why.

  2. 02

Reduce the lookup to a single gesture

The main flow was designed to end in one search and one read. Everything that didn't serve that path, including features that seemed like good ideas, stayed out of the first version.

  3. 03

    System before screens

Brand cards, status states and score scales were defined as components with their own rules before the screens were finalized. Consistency became a result of structure, not of manual review.

Solution

What was built

A public, open source platform where every brand has a verifiable status, a trust score and a record of where the information came from. The content architecture allows growth from dozens to thousands of brands without redesigning navigation.

Result

The product delivers the answer in one interaction and shows the trail of evidence to anyone who wants to check. The decision to expose the level of confidence, instead of hiding uncertainty behind a seal, is what sustains the platform's credibility.
